In 1827 a pontoon was introduced here to transport travelers across the Gariep river. The town is build on a farm named Buffelsvlei in 1828 by Pieter Jacobus De Wet. Aliwal North, on the south bank of the Orange River is a popular resort, famous for its hot springs.
