The town was founded on the farm, De Rietvallei, owned by Gert and Johanna Scheepers. It was founded in 1804 and is named after commissioner general J.A. Uitenhage De Mist. In the 1880’s the signal man at the station, who had lost both legs in a accident, trained a baboon called Jack to pull the signal levers. Jack did the job for nine years until his death.
