Stephanus Greeff bought the farm Vischkuil-aan-de-Buffelsrivierin the1870s, planning to establish a town, which only took off once the railway line up to the spot. The railway siding was first called Buffelsrivier, which was renamed to Nassau to avoid confusion with Buffelsrivier near East London. The name was later changed in again to Laingsburg. The town was laid out in 1881 and became a municipality in 1904.
