Clanwilliam was first settled by the Huguenots in 1688 and the first farms was granted by Governor Simon Van Der Stel. In early years Clanwilliam was known as Jan Dissels Vlei, after the stream of that name that flows through the town. In 1814 the name was changed to Clanwilliam. It became a municipality in 1900.
