The town was proclaimed in 1873 on the farms Elandsfontein and Doornfontein. Lichtenburg means “town of light” in Dutch. Visit the Socio-Historical Museum, the Argricultural Museum and the Diggers Museum. There’s also a art gallery and the Old Magistrate’s Court which date back to 1895. In the cemetery there are some graves of British soldiers and the grave of general De La Rey. Outside of town there is a very deep sinkhole which is frequented by divers.
