Klerksdorp is named after Jacob Le Clerq, the towns first magistrate. Visit Goudkoppie with its mining shafts dating from the 1880s or the Klerksdorp Museum, build in 1891 as a prison. There is also the Warden House and the Powder Magazine. Just outside of town is the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve. There is also a lot of scenic hikes in the area with the old cemetery which has graves of British soldiers and of children who died in the Klerksdorp Concentration Camp. The annual Klerksdorp Air Show is held in August.
