The town was founded on the farm Olyvenhoudtsdrift by the reverend Christiaan Schroder. The town was later renamed after Sir Thomas Upington. The Dutch Reformed mission build in 1873 is now a museum. There is also a life size monument of a donkey, a camel and a rider statue. Visit the Spitskop Nature Reserve, the Orange River Co-Operative Wine Cellars and the SA Dried Fruit Co-Operative. The railway bridge across the river is 1067m long.
