Springbok was established in 1862 on the farm Melkboschkuil as a copper mining center. It became a municipality in 1933 and is named after the Springbok antelope. There is the Namaqualand Museum, the Goegap Nature Reserve and the Hester Malan Wild Flower Garden. The copper mining shaft can be seen which was established by Simon Van Der Stel in 1685.
