Lydenburg was founded in 1849 and became a municipality in 1927. Lydenburg is Dutch for “town of suffering”. The town is situated at the foot of the Long Tom Pass which is 55.6 km long. It is also the oldest town in Mpumalanga and has the Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve.
