The first visitor to Cape St Francis was Diogo Pereira Botelho in 1537. The second visitor was Manoel De Mesquita Perestrello, he was to explore the coast from Cape of Good Hope to Cape Correntes and eventually reached a Cape he named Cape Serras (Cape St Francis) and a bay to the east he named St. Francisca. In 1878 a lighthouse was erected on the rocky shore of the bay and still functions today.
