In 1849 three farms were granted to the reverend James Archbell and the first stands were sold in 1850. It become a stopover for travelers. The town is named after the home in Northhumberland of the Earl of Grey, British Colonial Secretary. There are several water falls in the area with the Howick Falls the highest at 93m and a waterfall restaurant overlooking the falls. In the Karkloof Nature Reserve are the Cascade Falls at 25m and the Shelter Falls at 37m.
