It is the oldest town in the north-eastern cape and was founded on the farm Klipfontein in 1846. The town’s most imposing symbol is its Dutch Reformed Church, started in 1912. A memorial to townsfolk who died during the Anglo-Boer War was unveiled in 1908 by General Koos De La Rey.
