Estcourt was given its name in 1863 and it became a municipality in 1914. The town was named after a member of the English Parliament, Thomas Estcourt, who sponsored immigration of the settlers to this area. Trout fishing can be done in the BushmansRiver and the Wagendrift Dam offers fishing and water sport. There is also the Moor Park Nature Reserve.
