George Harrison worked on a small mine on a farm called Wilgespruit in 1884. He found A gold bearing reef in 1886 and the town started on Randjieslaagte, a governor owned farm, which was situated away from the actual diggings. By 1889 it was the largest town in South Africa. Johannesburg is named after Johann Rissik and Christiaan Johannes Joubert, the first commissioners during the gold rush. It became a city in 1928.
