The Premier Diamond Mine was established here in 1902 and in 1905 Thomas Cullinan discovered the worlds largest diamond, which was named after him and also the town. The diamond was 3024,75 carat and was cut up into several smaller stones. All these stones are set in the British Crown Jewels.

Accommodation at Somabula Nature Reserve

Somabula offers self-catering chalets, a lovely shaded camping ground and accommodation in beautifully restored ox wagons. We have 400 hectares of indigenous trees, pristine bush and excellent birding. The reserve boasts a wide variety of antelope as well as giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. Smaller animals, interesting insects and reptiles can also be viewed. New species of game such as nyala, waterbuck and springbok were recently introduced onto the reserve.
